7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) Compensation Structure

The Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position at IIT Hyderabad (IITH) is governed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) OM No. DST/PCP/01/2023-24. The fellowship is consolidated at Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years. Since Hyderabad is classified as a Class X city, House Rent Allowance (HRA) is applicable at 27% of the fellowship amount, which equals Rs. 9,990, bringing the Gross Monthly Fellowship to Rs. 46,990. Unlike regular 7th CPC government employees, JRFs are not eligible for Dearness Allowance (DA) or Transport Allowance (TA). There are no standard National Pension System (NPS) or Provident Fund (PF) deductions from fellowships, meaning the net in-hand monthly payout remains approximately Rs. 46,990. However, minor campus medical insurance deductions may apply. This fellowship is exempt from income tax under Section 10(16) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, as it is a scholarship for pursuing research.

Statutory Reservation & Age Relaxation Guidelines

IIT Hyderabad strictly adheres to the Ministry of Education and DoPT guidelines for research recruitments. While JRF positions are project-linked, reservation principles apply to the overall intake. Relaxations in qualifying marks (typically 5% in CGPA/percentage) and age limits are granted: 5 years for SC/ST and Women candidates, and 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates. PwBD candidates receive a 10-year age relaxation. The 10% vertical reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) is maintained in accordance with DoPT OM No. 36039/1/2019-Estt (Res). Women candidates are highly encouraged to apply, often benefiting from application fee exemptions.
