Understanding NPS Tier-1 Rules & Taxation

Triple Tax Exemption (EEE)

NPS Tier-1 enjoys Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) tax status. Contributions qualify for tax deductions up to ₹2,00,000 annually (₹1,50,000 under 80CCD(1) + ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B)), investment gains are tax-free during accumulation, and the 60% lump sum at maturity is 100% tax-free under Section 10(12A).

Central Govt vs Private Sector NPS

For Central Government employees, NPS contributions are mandatory: 10% of (Basic Pay + DA) deducted from the employee's salary and matched by a 14% contribution from the Central Government. All citizens between 18 and 70 years can also open voluntary All Citizen model accounts.

NPS vs Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)

Under the new Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) effective 2025, employees maintain a 10% contribution while the government contribution rises to 18.5%. UPS guarantees an assured pension of 50% of the last 12 months average basic pay for staff with 25+ years of qualifying service.
