7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) Compensation Structure

The Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position at IIT Indore (IITI) is governed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) guidelines rather than the standard 7th CPC pay matrix. The fellowship offers a consolidated monthly stipend of Rs. 37,000 for the first two years. Since it is a fellowship, Dearness Allowance (DA at 53%) and Transport Allowance (TA) are not admissible. However, House Rent Allowance (HRA) is provided at the rate of 18% for Indore (Class Y city), amounting to Rs. 6,660 per month, which brings the Gross Monthly Fellowship to Rs. 43,660. As this is a non-salaried research fellowship, there are no deductions for National Pension System (NPS) or Provident Fund (PF). Consequently, the net in-hand monthly stipend remains Rs. 43,660, which is also exempt from income tax under Section 10(16) of the Income Tax Act, making it highly lucrative for researchers.

Statutory Reservation & Age Relaxation Guidelines

In accordance with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines and Ministry of Education mandates, IIT Indore strictly implements statutory reservations for research positions. Relaxations in the qualifying marks and age limits are provided, with 5 years for SC/ST and PwBD candidates, and 3 years for OBC-NCL candidates. A 10% vertical reservation is allocated for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Furthermore, in line with central government norms to promote women in STEM, female candidates are exempted from paying the application fee and receive age relaxation as per prevailing rules.
