7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) Compensation Structure

IIT Bombay Post-Doctoral Fellows (IPDF) are remunerated based on the Ministry of Education (MoE) and DST guidelines, aligned with the 7th CPC revisions for Research Associates. For an RA-I level, the basic fellowship starts at approximately 58,000 INR. With the current Dearness Allowance (DA) at 53%, the adjusted component adds significantly to the package. Since Mumbai is a Class X city, House Rent Allowance (HRA) is calculated at 27% of the basic fellowship (approx. 15,660 INR). Transport Allowance (TA) is typically 7,200 INR plus DA. The Gross Monthly Salary for a fresh Post-Doc (RA-I) reaches approximately 1,05,000 INR. After statutory deductions for the National Pension System (NPS) or Provident Fund (approx. 10% of Basic+DA) and Professional Tax, the in-hand net estimate remains around 92,000 to 95,000 INR. This structure ensures competitive compensation for high-level academic research within the premier technical institute framework.

Statutory Reservation & Age Relaxation Guidelines

In accordance with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) and Ministry of Education guidelines, IIT Bombay implements statutory reservations for Post-Doctoral recruitments. Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates receive a 5-year age relaxation, while Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL) receive 3 years. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) are entitled to a 10-year relaxation. A 10% vertical reservation is maintained for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Furthermore, as per Government of India norms, women candidates are often exempted from application fees to encourage gender diversity in high-level STEM research and academia.
